MASH Test Level 3 compliant.

Brifen Wire Rope Road Barrier has been fully crash-tested to meet MASH Test Level 3 (TL3). The system comprises round steel posts which support 4 tensioned wire ropes; the posts are supported by concrete footings which contain plastic voids which are designed to help with installation and repair.

World leading wire rope safety barrier.

The Brifen road barrier system is flexible in that it can be installed on the verge or on the median to help prevent cross-over impacts. Impacting vehicles are restrained by the tensioned cables while the posts yield by bending almost to ground level.

The ropes interlaced between the posts, strengthen the system’s ability to transfer the force from vehicle impacts into the barrier and ground. Helping minimise damage to the vehicle and injuries to occupants.

The Brifen Wire Rope Safety Barrier has passed many crash tests globally, with zero deaths in 30 years of its installation in 30 countries. It also does not need mechanical assistance for any repairs and proves to be a cost-efficient option when compared to other variants, making it ideal for your roadside projects.

  • MASH Test Level 3 compliant
  • Soft vehicle containment and redirection
  • Unique weave pattern limits dynamic deflection by transferring loads away from the impact zone
  • Non-release terminal ends allow the system to remain anchored after impacts
  • Rapid removal of posts following impact
  • Hot-dip galvanised components
  • 1270mm round posts support the 4 wire ropes
  • Rope heights: 890mm, 710mm, 530mm, 355mm
  • Concrete footings: 300mm wide, 900mm deep
  • Embedment depth: 300mm

Frequently Asked Questions

Brifen® Wire Rope barrier uses multiple high-tensile wire ropes tensioned between posts to catch and redirect vehicles that leave their lane. The flexible system absorbs impact energy by deflecting longitudinally along the rope length, slowing the vehicle progressively and preventing it from crossing into oncoming traffic. This deflection behaviour also reduces the deceleration force on the people inside a vehicle compared to a rigid barrier.

Wire rope barriers require more working width than steel beam systems because of the deflection that occurs during impact. The required deflection space depends on the specific product configuration and the vehicle containment level, but as a guide, we recommend a minimum clear zone of around 3 to 4 metres is typically needed. We review your project geometry and deflection requirements before specifying the installation.

Brifen® is commonly used as a median barrier on divided roads and motorways where the median width is sufficient to accommodate the deflection requirements of the system. It is particularly effective in long median runs where a flexible, low-maintenance barrier is preferred over a rigid concrete option. We install Brifen® to the manufacturer’s specifications and RMS requirements.

Wire rope barriers will require you to complete tension checks and post-impact inspections to make sure the ropes remain at the correct tension and the posts are undamaged. After an accident or incident, the affected section should be inspected and re-tensioned or replaced before the barrier is returned to service.

Brifen® Wire Rope Safety Barrier is a proven system with international crash test credentials and is accepted for use on Australian roads in accordance with AS/NZS 3845. All installations are carried out to the relevant project specifications, Transport for NSW requirements, and the manufacturer’s installation guidelines.
