Frequently Asked Questions

A crash cushion is a device installed at the end of a rigid or semi-rigid barrier to protect motorists from a head-on impact with the barrier face. They are used at locations such as the noses of concrete median barriers, bridge piers, toll plaza approach points, and other fixed hazards where a vehicle leaving the road is likely to approach the barrier end at a direct angle.

The crash cushions we install are manufactured to comply with NCHRP 350 standards, which require the barrier to withstand impacts from a small car at 72 km/h as well as higher-speed vehicle tests. Metal Fencing Specialists’ crash cushions are fully compliant with NCHRP 350 across all required test conditions, confirming their performance for protecting motorists in real-world impact scenarios.

Crash cushions are available for both permanent roadside locations and temporary traffic management applications. For temporary installations such as construction zones, redirective or non-redirective portable crash cushions are used to protect workers and motorists from exposed barrier ends. We advise on the appropriate product for the duration and speed environment of each application.

Most crash cushions are designed to be repairable or replaceable after an impact. Whether the unit can be reset or needs full replacement depends on the severity of the strike and the specific product model.
